The Luminous Mysteries

Five scenes from the life of Jesus and Mary. Hold one in mind through each decade, and let its fruit take root in yours.

1

The Baptism in the Jordan

Matthew 3:13–17

Jesus wades into the Jordan alongside sinners, and John baptizes him. The sky tears open: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

The fruit of this mystery: Openness to the Holy Spirit

2

The Wedding at Cana

John 2:1–11

The wine runs out at a wedding. Mary tells Jesus, then gives the servants the best advice ever spoken: “Do whatever he tells you.” Water becomes the finest wine of the feast.

The fruit of this mystery: To Jesus through Mary

3

The Proclamation of the Kingdom

Mark 1:14–15

“The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Jesus walks Galilee healing the sick, forgiving sinners, and calling ordinary people to follow him.

The fruit of this mystery: Repentance and trust in God

4

The Transfiguration

Luke 9:28–36

On the mountain his face changes and his clothing flashes white as lightning. Moses and Elijah appear beside him, and the Father speaks: “This is my Son, my Chosen. Listen to him.”

The fruit of this mystery: Desire for holiness

5

The Institution of the Eucharist

Luke 22:14–20

On the night before he dies, Jesus takes bread and says, “This is my body, given for you.” He leaves his friends not a memory but himself.
