A prayer for someone who is grieving

When someone is grieving, most words fall short, and the fear of saying the wrong thing keeps many of us from saying anything at all.

You don't have to fix their sorrow. You can carry it. That is what praying for someone is.

For the one who mourns

God of all consolation, be near to them in their sorrow.

When words run out, stay with them. When sleep won't come, keep watch with them.

Give them people who show up, food that appears, and the strange stubborn comfort of being remembered.

And when they are ready, not before, give them peace.

Amen.

A rosary prayed for a grieving person is an old and gentle gift, you can pray it today and let them know with one line. And if you are the one grieving: you can ask for prayers without explaining anything. “For a private intention” is always enough.
