A prayer for someone who just died
Catholics have always prayed for their dead, immediately, instinctively, and for a long time afterward. Love does not end at death, and neither does what love can do. Praying for the dead is one of the oldest mercies in the Church.
This is the prayer generations have said first:
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May their soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.
The rosary is the Church's old companion in mourning, prayed at wakes, at gravesides, and quietly at kitchen tables for years afterward. You can pray today's rosary for the repose of their soul, and if their family would be comforted by knowing, let them know: “I prayed a rosary for them today.”
